The Three Guardians

True Stories

Based on an account recorded by Boris Ryabinin, who heard the story in the Stavropol region.

It was March. In the Caucasus, winter was not yet ready to leave. In the mountains, a quiet day could turn within minutes into a snowstorm that erased paths, tracks and any sense of direction.

That was how it all began.

A blizzard swept across the pastures. The wind battered the flock, snow swirled around the animals, and visibility vanished. When the storm passed, some four hundred sheep were missing. So were the three Caucasian Shepherd Dogs that guarded them.

The search began. People scoured the slopes and valleys, checking places where the animals might have found shelter. But there was no sign of the flock.

Days turned into weeks. Hope slowly faded. It was difficult to imagine that the sheep and dogs could survive alone in the mountains for so long.

Yet somewhere out there, the three guardians were still doing their work.

In May, about six weeks after they disappeared, the flock was finally found in a deep ravine. The sheep were alive. And there were no longer four hundred, but around five hundred: lambs had been born during those weeks.

Beside them stood the three dogs — utterly exhausted, bearing wounds from encounters with wolves, but still at their posts.

No one knew how many attacks they had driven back, or how they had found the strength to carry on. Boris Ryabinin suggests that they probably survived by catching small animals.

But one thing was clear: they had not abandoned the flock.

There was no shepherd to guide them, bring them food or take over the watch. The responsibility remained theirs.

To a Caucasian Shepherd, the flock is more than the animals it walks beside. It is what has been entrusted to its care — even when the human is no longer there.

When they were found, the three dogs could hardly have known that they had done something extraordinary. Perhaps, for them, it was much simpler:

The storm came.

The people disappeared.

The flock remained.

And someone had to guard it.

They were that someone.

Still there.

Beside the flock.

Down to the very last sheep. 🐾
