What is Hip and Elbow Dysplasia?

Hip and elbow dysplasia are developmental orthopedic conditions that can affect large and giant dog breeds. They occur when the joints do not develop properly, leading to abnormal movement, increased wear, pain, and, in severe cases, arthritis later in life.

Responsible breeders screen their breeding dogs to reduce the risk of passing these conditions on to future generations.

Why are dogs tested?

Health testing helps breeders make informed breeding decisions and protect the long-term health of the breed.

At Seveguard BG FCI, all breeding dogs are officially examined by certified specialists, and only dogs with suitable results are included in our breeding program.

Understanding the results

HD – Hip Dysplasia

HD-A – Excellent hip joints. No signs of hip dysplasia.

HD-B – Near-normal hip joints, with only minor deviations from ideal joint conformation.

ED – Elbow Dysplasia

ED-0 – No signs of elbow dysplasia. Healthy elbow joints.

Why this matters

Selecting breeding dogs with healthy hips and elbows helps reduce the risk of inherited orthopedic problems and supports the development of strong, healthy, and active puppies.

Health testing is just one part of responsible breeding, alongside temperament, character, structure, and overall well-being.
